When most people think of the World’s most haunted places they think of old castles and buildings that have been around for centuries in Europe and other parts of the world…but America has a few “haunts” of our own.

Here is our list of the Top 5 most haunted places in the country.

5. The Winchester Mansion – San Jose, California

Sarah Winchester was a very wealthy widow who built a 160 room Victorian mansion in 1884. To get an idea of the scope of this house, it was under construction 24 hours a day for 38 years.

Sarah believed in the supernatural, and had many bizarre features added into the home such as false doors to confuse evil spirits, and a séance room where she would get building plans from ghosts – and develop them. She also had a staircase built that leads to the ceiling.

The mansion is now a tourist destination, and many people have reported hearing organ music in the room where she died, smelling chicken soup in the kitchen, seeing red balls of light, and much more.

4. Bobby Mackey’s Music World – Wilder, Kentucky

Bobby Mackey’s Music World may be a dance hall now, but in the 1850s it was a slaughter house. On top of that, devil worshipers reportedly used the basement, which collected animal blood, for rituals. There are even reports that a woman was beheaded there.

Added to that, it was apparently a speakeasy in the 1920s and there were several mob murders on the site. Since 1976 (when it was converted into a dance hall), at least 30 people have reported supernatural happenings including appearances of ghosts dressed in cowboy clothing.

One unhappy customer even claims that a ghost caused him to break his arm in the bathroom of the building, and has filed suit against Bobby’s for not ridding the place of “spirits”.

3. Viscilla Ax Murder House – Viscilla, Iowa

With a name like that, it kind of HAS to be haunted, doesn’t it?

This peaceful community was shocked in 1912 when they discovered that the J.B. Moore family (including two parents, and four children) and two children that were spending the night, were murdered in their beds.

To this day the murders go unsolved, and many unusual phenomena have been reported in the house since. In 1998 the Moore House was added to the National Register of Historic Places, and today is even open to overnight visitors.

Guests have reported many things, including children’s voices, moving objects, odd sounds, and some have even recorded what they believe to be audio and video evidence.

2. Lemp Mansion – St. Louis, Missouri

The Lemp Mansion has been surrounded by tragedy. It began with the death of William Lemp’s son in 1904. Shortly afterward William committed suicide in the house. In 1920 his daughter did the same thing. Then later so did William Lemp J.r., and Charles Lemp.

After all this tragedy the house became a boarding house, and later a restaurant (which is still open). Many people have reported sounds of apparitions, a piano playing itself, voices, and even glasses flying through the air.

1. Bachelor’s Grove Cemetary – Midlothian, IL

The entire areas surrounding this abandoned cemetery is said to be haunted. Most of the graves are from the 1800s, and the cemetery has been abandoned since 1965. Vandals have destroyed many of the tombstones since that time, and there have been many reports of satanic activities in the area. Over 100 reports have been filed regarding strange phenomena in and around this most haunted place.

They include ghost lights, voices, apparitions, sightings of unexplainable creatures, and many more. The nearby lagoon is also said to be haunted, as is a farmhouse and turnpike near the cemetery.
