Let me start by saying that at 265 lbs of not all that much muscle – I qualify as an obese person. I’m not so big that I have to sit in two seats on a plane – but even if I was, I would expect to have to pay for two seats.
This is an issue that has made a surprising number of headlines over the years, and it never seems to cease flaring up the opinions of people on both sides of the issue.
The Canadian Transportation Authority has made an official decision on the matter claiming that people that are “functionally disabled by obesity” must be allowed a second seat, without having to pay for it.
Airlines have attempted to appeal the decision, but Canada is refusing to budge. Personally, I think it’s wrong. If you’re big enough to require two seats, I don’t see any reason why you shouldn’t have to pay for those seats. Perhaps a better solution would be a handicapped section for obese people, where a handful of seats were double sized.
I don’t know – the whole thing just seems a bit absurd to me…but it’s not the first thing to seem that way, and it won’t be the last.
