There are a variety of gadgets out there for travelers…but there is one gadget on the horizon that could end up being the ultimate travel gadget….the iPhone.
Why?
Well, for starters the new iPhone 3G (set to launch on July 11th) will have built-in GPS navigation. It’s certainly not the first mobile phone to feature that option, but that’s not what makes the iPhone so unique.
What makes the iPhone different from every other phone on the market right now is what is “under the hood” of the device. See, deep inside an iPhone is a robust operating system…Mac OSX. This is the same operating system as Apple’s Mac computers, which are gaining more and more popularity every day.
This system gives the phone an amazingly powerful platform for software developers to begin creating applications…and they are…by the thousands. Many travel and entertainment applications are in development.
You’ll be able to keep track of your golf score from you iPhone, or use Tom Tom GPS on a device that is probably smaller than your TV remote. You’ll be able to surf the Internet and find directions and points of interest like never before on the iPhone, and with the amazing development community out there the options for travel specific applications are virtually unlimited.

It could be the utimate travel gadget for domestic trips ONLY! But for international travels NO WAY…. With the roaming data plan AT&T offers to iPhone users, there’s no way you can use the web, email etc while abroad, unless you are willing pay a small fortune… I don’t understand why Blackberry user’s can have a flat US$69.99 rate for unlimited email abroad and iPhone’s users can’t…

I agree that At&t should offer a flat rate international plan for the iPhone – but you do have the option to turn the data roaming off – then you can still use your iPhone in wi-fi hot spots.

I agree with you. Turning data roaming off is possible and desirable. However, by doing that, the iPhone would be the ultimate, but limited, travel companion!!
It is just a pity. I am an iPhone user and I am, sadly, planning to buy a blackberry solely because of the flat unlimited international data roaming plan. I want to send emails and browse the web anytime, not only when I have a free hotspot available (which in several countries is hard to find).
