While traveling in Rome, after completing a Mediterranean Cruise, Frank Phel, 74, was struck and killed by a subway train on May 23rd according to Gadling.
Phel was drugged by a 54-year old Italian man who talked up the couple at a local cafe, then drugged a pair of cappuccinos he fetched for them. After they were significantly intoxicated, the man robbed them, and left them to wander the streets of Rome in a drugged state. Frank Phel accidentally stumbled onto the train tracks at the station.
Police arrested the suspect, and investigators are now going over footage from the cafe, which apparently capture’s the couple’s encounter with the thief.
Its a sad, cautionary tale, for any world traveler.
