Traveling with your dog, especially if you have a large dog, can be a very challenging thing. Animals that are too large to join you on a flight, for example, will have to travel as cargo - and that can be dangerous.

Here are some tips to help you keep you and your dog safe as you travel.

1. Plan Ahead - If you have a dog that is small enough to travel with you on the flight, you will need to plan ahead to make sure he/she can fly with you. Most airlines only allow one or two pets per flight - so even if your dog is small enough to be on with you, you’ll need to make sure you reserve your spot ahead of time.

2. Take a direct flight - Unless you just don’t have any other choice, take a direct flight to get you and your dog there in the quickest time possible. If you must change flights schedule enough time to take your dog for a walk and let him/her stretch their legs. Check to make sure their tags are still firmly attached, and that the ID is clear and easy to read.

3. Carry your paperwork and photos - You need to be sure and carry a photo of your dog, and a veterinarian certificate showing that your pet is in good health. The certificate must have been issued 14 days before departure or sooner - to ensure that the information is updated and accurate. Ask your vet about them.

4. Get an airline approved crate - Make sure your crate is approved by the airline your flying on. Also make sure it has enough room for your dog to turn around in so that they aren’t trapped in a small, uncomfortable space.

5. Wait for a baggage handler - Don’t leave your pet until an actual baggage handler comes to collect him/her. You might want to consider giving the baggage handler a tip. There’s no guarantee that your dog will be treated better for it - but you never know.
